Our stunning Torrazzo Violin pays homage to the great Italian Master Luthier Giuseppe Guarneri (21 August 1698 – 17 October 1744), often referred to as “Guarneri del Gesu”. His instruments are considered equal in quality to those of Stradivari, and claimed by some to be superior. The Torrazzo is inspired by the “Lord Wilton” Guarneri violin, played by Yehudi Menhuin, and prized for its beauty and quality of tone.

The Torrazzo is the Bell Tower of the Cathedral of Cremona, Italy. Cremona has a rich history of being home to many Italian Master Luthiers, including Guarneri himself. At 112.7 meters, it is the third tallest brickwork bell tower in the world. According to popular tradition, construction on the tower dates back to 754, however it is more likely that construction began in the 13th century. In the Torrazzo’s fourth story resides the largest astronomical clock in the world. The seven bells are tuned in the scale of A major, and date back to the 18th century. The mechanism was built by Francesco and Giovan Battista Divizioli (father and son) between 1583 and 1588. The exterior, originally painted by Paolo Scazzola in 1483 but later repainted many times, represents the sky with zodiac constellations and the Sun and Moon moving through them. The Torrazzo continues to watch over the luthiers of Cremona as they traverse the city streets, just as it did in Guarneri’s time.

Our Torrazzo Violin is a combination of beauty and fine craftsmanship, perfect for the advanced student or discerning intermediate to advanced adult player. Hand crafted from solid tonewoods, the Torrazzo features a well-seasoned spruce top with hand-inlaid purfling, beautiful quarter-cut flamed curly-maple back, ribs and scroll, and antiqued professional quality hand-applied oil varnish with warm red tones. This elegant violin comes with beautiful ebony fittings. As with all of our instruments, the Torrazzo violin comes with quality fittings and strings to optimize sound and playability. Every Patina instrument is professionally set up, inspected and play-tested by our expert staff in our Los Angeles, CA shop.
