Our beautiful Notre Dame Violin pays homage to the great Neo-Gothic era French Luthier J.B. Vuillaume (7 October 1798 – 19 March 1875), who crafted detailed fittings for the fine Italian instruments that would come through his shop. He also pioneered the antiquing process, making copies of old instruments made by the Italian masters like Stradivarius and Guarneri. Vuillaume was such an accurate copyist, it is said that Paganini himself could not distinguish the difference between his own Guarneri “Il Canone” violin, and the copy he made. Successful and celebrated during his lifetime, Vuillaume won various gold medals in the competitions of the Paris Universal Exhibitions in 1839, 1844 and 1855; the Council Medal in London in 1851 and, in that same year, the Legion of Honour.

The Notre Dame Violin is the perfect blend of old world beauty and modern convenience, perfect for the advancing intermediate student or discerning amateur to intermediate adult player. Hand crafted from solid tonewoods, the Notre Dame features a seasoned spruce top with hand-inlaid purfling, beautiful flamed maple back, ribs and scroll, and antiqued professional quality hand-applied oil varnish. This beautiful violin comes with a detailed, carved boxwood tailpiece and pegs, and matching boxwood chinrest. As with all of our instruments, the Notre Dame violin comes with quality fittings and strings to optimize sound and playability.
