Our gorgeous Basilica Viola pays homage to the incomparable Antonio Stradivari (1644 – December 18, 1737), generally considered the most significant and greatest artisan in this field. Stradivari’s instruments are regarded as amongst the finest bowed stringed instruments ever created, and are highly prized and played by professionals today. A particularly stunning violin, nicknamed “The Messiah”, is on permanent display at the Ashmolean Museum in London. This instrument was previously owned and copied by J.B. Vuillaume, and is widely considered the most pristine known example of Stradivari’s work still in existence.

In architecture, the term basilica signifies a kingly, and secondarily a beautiful, hall. Our Basilica Violin is inspired by instruments made during Stradivari’s prime, his “Golden Period” (1700 until the 1720s).

The Basilica Viola is perfect for an advanced student or discerning intermediate to professional adult player. Hand crafted from select tonewoods, the Basilica features a well-seasoned spruce top with hand-inlaid purfling, striking flamed curly-maple back, ribs and scroll, and antiqued professional quality hand-applied oil varnish with nuanced warm tones. Each of our Basilica violas are specially selected for their sound quality and quick response. As with all of our instruments, the Basilica comes with quality fittings and strings to optimize sound and playability. Every Patina instrument is professionally set up, inspected and play-tested by our expert staff in our Los Angeles, CA shop.
